The Lottery of Life

Well I thought here I am – Yesterday was my 59th birthday – what have I done in life to ensure my immortality – Nothing – I read a quote somewhere that “Most men lead lives of quiet desperation” and I felt just like that. I thought I’d read a few of my favourite blogs today. So I logged on and went to Notes From A Strange Blue Ghost: Julia Darling. Clicked on the link and was transported. Courage is described as grace under pressure. How much pressure had this lady lived and died under. I immediately knew how minor my fit of depression was and really how lucky I have been in life. Apart from the odd broken bone (last time smashing my offside knee falling over in Tesco’s car park !!) I have had few major health problems and sailed through life firstly in the Infantry then as a Policeman with less than 60 days off sick in 22 ½ years ! I be-moan my luck when I don’t win the lottery when, in fact the lottery of life has been kind to me in many ways – so stop moaning and get on with it.
It has cheered my up considerable to read this brave lady’s blog

Happy Birthday for yesterday! I know exactly how you feel, not being too far behind you in years. You've spared yourself from me giving you the Zen pep talk because you've just said it all yourself. It sounds like you are doing just fine. But then again you could always get yourself sportscar and do a rally (that's was my answer). Now all that's left on my own list is to cure one disease, learn to fly a microlight, get SCUBA certified, speak at least one foreign language properly, form a a jazz band and fianlly nail my 1st dan aikido test.

Strangely enough ! - My old man took early retirement at 55 - bought a Dax cobra and some stringback gloves !
and went off chasing ladies - The Dr told him to grow up, stop drinking and smoking and generally "helling" it up - He didn't and it did ! He married his third wife 2 years later and was dead just after his 59th birthday! His wife - whom I've only met two or three times walzed off with the lot -! I was hoping to at least inherit his sports car and his camera collection, not withstanding the house with the 40ft picture window overlooking Carbis Bay in Cornwall but no such luck - All I got was his cufflink collection to remember him by !

Life's certainly a bugger and a philosophical approach and a sense of humour are the best tools to deal with it. I've just read the Julia Darling blog. What courage! I felt very moved and empowered by her dignity. Such stories help us retain a perspective on life too.

So what car are you going to get...?

I've just spent my last on a 2001 DHSE Range Rover in green - plated it with "G14 MOG" and would put it on my blog if I knew how !! Joined the Range Rover Register and want to take it off road - but I'm afraid she who must be obeyed won't let me at the moment - I'm working on it

Nice one! I've always fancied a Range Roveer too.

It took me awhile to figure out how to put pictures on the site. It's not too difficult once you know how. Photos are hosted on a separate server. Several are available, free of charge. I use Flickr (www.flickr.com). Open an account, upload your pics, and then place the HTML code in your blog. Easy. And it makes the blog more fun too.

I'll walk you through it if you like...
